We’re all used to washing our faces when we wake up in the morning and when we’re getting ready to crawl into bed each day, but how many of us actually think about cleaning the products that we use to apply our daily makeup? No, we’re not talking about cleaning your legit makeup products like foundation and eyeshadow. We’re talking about cleaning the applicators, like your brushes and sponges that you use on a daily basis. Chances are, you don’t clean them as often as you probably should, and it’s probably because you’re not really sure how. No need to worry beauty queens! We have found you some common household ingredients that you can mix together to completely clean out your bristles, while also keeping them in tip-top shape.
OLIVE OIL + ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP
Mix olive oil and two times the amount of soap together on a regular plate. Using paper plates for this will be a struggle because the oil will seep right through, and cause a mess on your counter. Take one of your makeup brushes and dampen it with room temperature water. After doing this, take the brush, put it into the mixture, and rub it into the bristles using your palm and fingers. Rinse the brushes under lukewarm water until you don’t see any soapy matter coming from the bristles. Roll a towel up and lay a paper towel down on top of it, so the paper towel looks like a slide coming down from the regular towel. Lay your brushes out on the paper towel with the handle resting on the regular towel. This will help your brushes dry on a slant, while also keeping the water out of the main tube of the brush. Allow them to dry like this overnight.
Fill a bowl of room temperature water and a decent amount of dish detergent. (You can also use baby shampoo in this scenario as well.) Twirl each of your makeup brushes in the bowl until the tops of the brushes are soapy. You can also use your fingers to get a lather, but make sure you do this gently. Rinse in the sink until the water is no longer soapy. Allow them to dry overnight.
VINEGAR + LEMON
Vinegar and lemon together are always a cleaning solution that works well. Mix white vinegar into a cup of hot water, swirl your makeup brushes in the mixture, and then rinse them off with colder (but not freezing) water. To get rid of the nasty vinegar smell, rub your brushes against a lemon and leave them somewhere to dry.
